Morning sickness or Emesis gravidarum (nausea, vomiting) is a discomfort that occurs in the first trimester of pregnancy caused by increased levels of the hormones estrogen, progesterone and HCG (Hormone Chorionic Gonadotropin). The increase in these hormones triggers discomfort and anxiety. Pregnant women who continuously experience emesis gravidarum will feel worried about the insufficient nutrition of the fetus they are carrying. This will indirectly have an impact on the psychological health of pregnant women.
This study aims to determine the effect of prenatal yoga in reducing emesis gravidarum. This type of research is quasy experiment with a one group pretest-posttest design approach. The population in this study were all pregnant women with gestational age ≤ 12 weeks. Samples were all pregnant women of gestational age ≤ 12 weeks with emesis gravidarum. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling. The data collection instrument is a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using homogeneity test and paired sample t test.
Results: Homogeneity test for the characteristics of each group which includes age, parity, occupation and income, shows a p value > 0.05. The non-parametric Wilcoxon test results obtained a p value of 0.003 (p <0.05). There are differences in the scale of nausea and vomiting before and after the implementation of prenatal yoga. Suggestion: Pregnant women should be active in participating in prenatal yoga activities provided by the nearest health facility in order to improve physical fitness and psychological health, especially in reducing anxiety due to emesis gravidarum.
